Irish Gemologist & Jewellery Designer, Helen Gallagher felt there was a large gap in the market for affordable Jewellery using only the finest of natural gemstones, so in 2014, she launched Rodanthe Jewels from her home in Colombo, Sri Lanka where she was based with her family. Living in Sri Lanka “the jewellery box of the Indian ocean” allowed Helen unique access to the famous gem mines of Rathnapura and other areas.
Based overseas for the best part of 25 years, primarily in the Far and Middle East, where jewellery is worn and displayed with such abandon, gave Helen a heightened sense of interest in gemstones.
Years of study under the guidance of Chairman & Senior Gemologist, Hirosha Yahmapath, at the International Gemological Academy of Colombo, and the day to day handling of gemstones gave Helen a deep understanding and knowledge of gemstones, and how they can be incorporated into wearable pieces.
Helen likes to create elegant statement pieces, with the emphasis on the gemstone, ‘however at the end of the day these pieces must be wearable”, she never thinks “oh this is daytime jewellery or that is for evening, glamour should be perpetual”. These stones are a piece of history, they have been around for millions of years “Jewellery is like a biography, a story that tells the many chapters of life” .
Helen has since returned home to Ireland and is based in Dublin, where most of her jewellery is now handcrafted. With the modern empowered woman in mind; Helen continues to design an elegant, yet affordable collection, with each stone hand selected by her, “no two gemstones are alike, as each fine jewel is masterfully cut from its original rough form, giving you a unique and one of a kind collection that is Rodanthe.
